Health officials in Indiana are sounding the alarm after a sudden surge of measles infections swept through the state this week. The Indiana Department of Health revealed that 31 new cases were confirmed in a window of just three days, pushing the total number of infections for the year to 97 as of Friday.
The outbreak is hitting some areas much harder than others, with LaGrange County emerging as the primary epicenter. Officials report that cases there jumped from ten on Wednesday to twenty two by the end of the week. Meanwhile, Elkhart County is also seeing an uptick, adding two more residents to its current tally of three positive cases.
State health representatives noted that a common thread among those infected is a lack of immunization, stating that most patients were not believed to be vaccinated against the virus. This trend has prompted medical experts to issue urgent reminders to families across the region about the importance of staying current with scheduled vaccinations to prevent further community transmission.
