Science Struggles To Find Proof That Medical Marijuana Cures Sleeplessness

For millions of people struggling with insomnia, the search for a good night’s rest often leads them away from traditional prescriptions and toward alternative remedies. Medical cannabis has become a particularly attractive option due to the availability of regulated oils and sprays containing precise doses of THC and CBD. However, a comprehensive new scientific review suggests that the hype surrounding cannabis as a sleep aid may be outpacing the actual evidence.

Researchers from the University of Manitoba and the Universidad Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires analyzed nine clinical studies involving over five hundred adults to see if medical cannabis truly improved sleep quality or duration. Their findings were underwhelming. In trials comparing regulated cannabis against placebos, there was little to no clinically meaningful improvement in how well participants slept or how they functioned during the following day. Furthermore, those using cannabis were more likely to report mild side effects like dizziness and dry mouth.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Lucia Varela, clarified that these results do not necessarily prove that medical cannabis is ineffective, but rather that current research is too poor to draw any firm conclusions. The reviewers noted several systemic flaws in previous studies, including tiny participant groups and inconsistent product formulations. Because most tests lasted only twelve weeks or fewer, scientists still don’t know if long term use provides any benefit or carries hidden risks.

Adding to the uncertainty is a significant lack of diversity among the people studied. Nearly three quarters of the participants were women, and the majority were young adults, leaving doctors unsure if these findings apply to men or elderly patients. For now, experts suggest that both clinicians and patients approach medical cannabis with caution until larger, more rigorous trials can provide definitive answers about its role in treating insomnia.
