California health officials are calling on residents to prioritize their immunity as the holiday season approaches, warning that winter gatherings often lead to a spike in respiratory infections. The California Department of Public Health is specifically urging the public to get vaccinated against influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus, commonly known as RSV. These shots are currently available at most local pharmacies and healthcare providers, with coverage provided for the majority of patients.
While general protection is encouraged for everyone over six months old regarding the flu shot, other vaccines target specific high-risk groups. Health leaders note that the newest COVID-19 booster is particularly important for seniors aged 65 and up, pregnant individuals, and very young children between six and twenty-three months. Meanwhile, the RSV vaccine is being prioritized for infants, toddlers, expectant mothers, and adults aged 75 or older who face a higher likelihood of severe complications.
Dr. Erica Pan, the state’s Public Health Officer, described vaccination as one of the best gifts citizens can give themselves and their loved ones during the festive period. She emphasized that while these viruses might seem common, they can lead to serious medical emergencies for vulnerable populations and those with underlying health conditions. To make the process more convenient for busy families, the department confirmed that all three vaccines are safe to administer during a single visit. Residents can schedule their appointments through local clinics or via the official state public health portal.
